One of the most important measures for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is Education for Sustainable Development. It has therefore also been included as sub-item SDG 4.7 in the series of "Sustainable Development Goals" and as a guiding perspective in the Baden-Württemberg education plan.
Aalen University was founded in 1962 as the Aalen State School of Engineering. Today, it is one of the larger universities in Baden-Württemberg, which is mainly based on the two strong pillars of technology and business.
Aalen University has been active in the field of sustainability for many years and works closely with the city of Aalen and the Local Agenda 21 Aalen. Every year, student projects related to sustainability are implemented - this way, students acquire knowledge and competencies on the one hand side and contribute to sustainable development in the region on the other hand at the same time.

The Grüner Aal (Green Eel after the eel in the coat of arms of Aalen) is a certification system for the environmental management of schools. The certificate is awarded to schools that introduce an environmental management system, implement environmental protection measures implement environmental protection measures and prepare an environmental statement on their activities, projects and goals. The "Grüner Aal" was developed as a project of the Local Agenda 21 by the Aalen University in cooperation with the Agenda Office of the City of Aalen.
The "Aalen Sustainability Trail" is a nature trail oriented around the waters of the Kocher, Aal and Rombach rivers. The nature trail was designed as part of the "Grüner Aal" environmental project of the UNESCO Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. The aim of the path is to experience sustainability directly and to enjoy the nature around Aalen through the included experience areas.
